Ivy Introspective Blog Tour (Interview)
Hello!
I am so excited to be a part of The Ivy Introspective Blog Tour! I had the pleasure of interviewing Kellyn Roth, the author of The Dressmaker’s Secret and her new release, Ivy Introspective.
About the Author
Kellyn Roth is a Christian historical women’s fiction & romance author from North-Eastern Oregon who loves border collies. A ranch girl with a love for storytelling, she’s been writing since she was seven and published since she was fourteen.
Kell lives in the country outside a small town in North-Eastern Oregon with her family, cat, and three puppy-dogs. When not writing, she teaches writing and talks about writing, but she also enjoys other things. She just can’t think of any right now.

What is your favorite thing about writing?
Ummm … writing! 😉 I just really enjoy writing. I know that my least favorite part of the process is editing, but other than that, I can honestly say I equally enjoy the whole kit and kaboodle!
What is some advice you would give to writers who dream of publishing a book?
Make extra sure you understand the writing craft! Dive into character building, story structure, themes – read countless articles and books – listen to all the podcasts – and most of all, write.
I always advise people who are thinking of publishing soon to make sure they’ve written a lot and read about writing a lot and then applied what they’ve read to still more writing! And, of course, got lots of feedback from people who know what they’re talking about.
Do you make an outline or not?
Always! I know not everyone will agree with me, but I think outlining is absolutely vital. It helps in so many ways during the writing process – and it saves on editing time, too. If you outline, you’ll probably have a stronger story in the end.
What are some things you have learned from past writing projects?
To keep writing. 😛 That’s generally what I learn from my writing projects – because every single one is individually challenging. Yet I’ve got to keep on keeping on!
How do you take what you read and learn from it?
It depends. If you mean for fiction, then I don’t really actively try to apply any lessons to my life because … I feel like that’s a useless exercise. Either it affects me, and the application is obvious, or it doesn’t.
As for nonfiction, it depends on the subgenre. For writing nonfiction, I’ll generally go straight from reading it to trying to apply it to my books.
What inspired Ivy Introspective?
I always knew I was going to write a story about Alice’s sister, Ivy. So I did. I’d somewhat impulsively said she’d had mental issues in book 1 (darned little 14-year-old me!) – so I had to do the research. And once I did, I realized writing a story about her was going to be challenging at the least!
However, I was determined to do so – and more than that, to help her. Because it’s not easy having any minor learning disability or anxiety or anything of the sort even in today’s world. In the Victorian era, it was more like a death sentence.
So, slowly, I found a way to help! And that’s the story I wrote.
What do you like about historical fiction?
I think it’s a lovely way for me to approach fiction in the real world (as I’d probably be horrible at making one up!) while also having a bit of distance from modern society.
Much as I believe in living in the presence, sometimes modern life can be overwhelming. I’m incredibly grateful for indoor toilets – and the internet. However, that doesn’t mean the stress doesn’t get from me!
I won’t be booking my spot on a time travel machine any time soon (well, maybe just for a visit!), but I do like to use my books as time travel machines!
In a world that doesn’t understand her, how can she grow?
Ivy Knight lives her life in a blur of confusion as the world passes her by in a tumultuous melody. She isn’t the perfect daughter or student, but as long as she can be with her family, she doesn’t mind watching rather than living.
Mrs. Chattoway treasures both of her granddaughters now that they’re reunited. When Ivy’s parents enroll her in a Scottish school for unique children, she’s happy to chaperone.
In a new place with a new guardian, Ivy discovers a special talent that helps her see the blurred world in a new way. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and Ivy becomes determined to find it—and help others do the same.

Hi! I’m Hannah, a crazy pen-wielding, jack-of-all-trades writer. I write contemporary stories with a magical (or vintage!) twist, usually featuring big families, delicious food, and a few tear jerking scenes. When I’m not writing, you could find me camping, sewing, hiking, cycling, skiing, playing violin or piano, reading, and many other “-ing” words.
Thanks for sharing this interview! It was a fun one to write for me. 😀
Thanks for hosting the tour! It was lots of fun and I can’t wait to get a copy of Ivy Introspective!
Aw, that’s good to hear! <3
