Consistency is Key
Hello!
I’ve seen a lot of writers who go weeks or months without writing. I was one of those writers too. I was very rarely motivated and inspired to write, so when I did write, I barely wrote anything. I never finished projects, getting bored of one project and moving onto another. My writing just suffered.
You see, almost everything takes practice. Playing an instrument, doing sports, cooking… A lot of these take consistent practice. If you play an instrument, you probably practice almost everyday. If you play a sport, you will have regular practices. All of these skills take consistent practice to get good at.
This is why writing consistently is very important and helpful. Even if it’s ten or fifteen minutes a day, it will work wonders.
In August, I started writing consistently. Before then, I would only write occasionally, maybe once every few months or so. In the ten months that I’ve been writing consistently, I’ve improved a lot. I’ve been able to complete a few novellas and short stories, which is so much more than I used to write.
How can you start writing consistently?
Implement writing into your schoolwork
Personally, I was homeschooled for this past school year. I decided to implement writing into my schoolwork, which helped me write very consistently. I wrote on the weekdays, doing it with my school work, taking the weekend off.
Plans and Schedules
Making a schedule with different times to write will help you a lot in fitting in time to write, especially when life gets busy.
Work your way up
Going from writing nothing to 2,000 words a day is going to burn you out fast. It’s much easier to start with 500 words, and slowly make your way up. This kept me from burning out, and eventually I was able to slowly increase my word count.
Tell your family
Tell your family (or whoever your living with) that you are planning on writing during these times. That way they won’t bother you while you are writing.
Participate in events
Events such as NaNoWriMo and Camp Nano are very helpful in getting a project done, connecting with a community of other writers, and making a final push to finish projects.
I hope these tips helped you out. Until next time!

Hi! Iโm Hannah, a crazy pen-wielding, jack-of-all-trades writer. I write contemporary stories with a magical (or vintage!) twist, usually featuring big families, delicious food, and a few tear jerking scenes. When Iโm not writing, you could find me camping, sewing, hiking, cycling, skiing, playing violin or piano, reading, and many other โ-ingโ words.
I completely agree with you about consistency being key. These are great tips!
Thank you so much! ๐
