The Legend of the Amethyst Ring Part 2
The next morning, I ate breakfast somberly. Sarah just couldn’t stop talking.
“I can’t wait to see what Montana will be like,” she said excitedly. “Maybe we will see cowboys or even a bear!”
“Now lets go over the schedule again,” Mother said looking directly at me. “We will board a train that goes to Kentucky. From there we will go to Kansas, which is where we will stay the night. From there we will-”
“Go in a wagon to Aunt Ivy’s farm,” Sarah and I finished.
After all of the numerous train rides, we finally got to Aunt Ivy’s. Her farm was beautiful. It was on top of a little hill, overlooking a field where the cows grazed. There were wildflowers everywhere, and there was a little creek flowing by. Aunt Ivy was collecting eggs from her chickens when she noticed us.
“Well hello,” she said. “How was your ride here?”
“It was great. The landscape was beautiful!” Mother replied.
Later, at supper, Aunt Ivy talked about Montana. Sarah was completely absorbed, but I was interested in looking around the house. The walls were made of wood. The floor was made of wood. The ceiling was even made of wood. I didn’t want to think of what would happen if this house where to catch on fire.
“How do you like the farm, Carol?” Aunt Ivy asked.
“Um, its definitely different from home,” I replied.
“Well I appreciate you coming up here. It will be nice to have young people enjoy the farm.”
Sarah spoke up, “Do you know why my mother isn’t here?”
“Well Sarah, your mother went riding today to get some things from town. She should be back pretty soon.” Aunt Ivy said.
When supper was done, Sarah and I went to bed. We were to share a small corner blocked off from the big bedroom with a blanket. Other than the big bedroom, there were no other rooms in the cabin.
The next day, Sarah’s mother still wasn’t back. Sarah was beginning to get a little frantic.
“She probably got stuck in town.” aunt Ivy said, “there was a pretty big storm last night.”
“What if we went there today, just to make sure she’s alright?” Sarah asked.
“Well, I do need to get a few things from the store, do you girls know how to ride horses?”
“Nope.” I said. I didn’t want to ride into town on a stinky horse. How embarrassing!
“I don’t know how to ride, but I’d love to learn how to!” Sarah said enthusiastically.
“Well for now, we can just ride in the wagon, and I can teach you soon.” Aunt Ivy said.
The wagon ride was bumpy and uncomfortable. I definitely preferred the nice carriages of New York. When we finally got to town, there were a few houses, a general store, and a bank. A little beyond the bank was a huge stone house.
“You girls should get something at the general store. Many things there are expensive, but they do have a bin with used things. You can take one thing for free.” Aunt Ivy said.
“Okay.” Sarah said, already running in.
When we got in, we found the box and started rummaging through it. I found a small ring made of gold with a purple jewel. I decided to take it. Sarah had found a book about horses that she wanted to take.
Stay tuned for part 3 next week!
